Technology and The Beauty Industry

It is no secret that in recent years technology has entered and changed almost every aspect of our lives including the way we work, shop and interact with other people. Even the beauty industry has not been "immune" to technology and it is being revolutionized by what is now called "Beauty Tech". These changes not only help users gain better results, but also enhance the customer experience. This blog explores five major trends that are influencing the industry:
Personalized cosmetics and AI
Different people have different skin types and tone. Hence, finding the right products that suit ones skin type may be a very challenging task. Luckily, this is where AI can help by scanning one's skin first and then suggesting a suite of cosmetics products that are suited to one's skin needs.
At home technology tools
Beauty Tech has also led to the development of home tools that may help gain results previously only received at cosmetics clinics. One of the biggest trend in this area is the use of LED light in facial masks that may help boost collagen level and skin's elasticity. The use of the LED technology has been widely adopted by many different cosmetic brands.
Biotechnology
Many cosmetics products manufacturers have started in recent years to include biotechnological ingredients in their products. Essentially, these are ingredients that are grown in laboratories facilities rather than in nature, but do carry the same benefits as if they were purely natural ingredients. Furthermore, these ingredients tend to be highly sustainable and consume minimal resources from nature.
E-commerce
Without a shadow of a doubt, the biggest trend in shopping and retail in recent years has been E-commerce and the shift of consumers to online shopping. Beauty Tech has enabled consumers to shop make-up products online using different "try-on apps". Using AI and consumers' smartphones, these apps allow them to see how a certain make-up product will look on them.
E-makeup
The last trend does not actually entail putting on cosmetics and make-up. Encouraged by the will of people to always look good on social media, several apps such as Instagram and Snapchat allow users to take a selfie and then apply make-up on themselves and, hence, enhance their looks in the photos.
