Question: As a Korean can you please tell me what place do beauty and skincare have in the Korean culture?
Answer: Beauty and skincare are HUGE in South Korea. It is important to everyone not just women! Koreans tend not to wear super heavy makeup foundation like many people do in the United States, and usually go for a more “natural” look.
Q: What part does skincare have in your personal life?
A: Skincare is very important to me. Growing up, I suffered from breakouts, especially in my high school years. I didn’t know much about skincare when I first started getting breakouts at the end of middle school, and my mom's tips didn’t work for me since she never struggled with any skin issues (she has the perfect skin). Hence, I started researching a lot and tried EVERYTHING from drug store products to high end products as well as facials and several other procedures (such as micro-needling and peeling). Ultimately, I learned that harsh products only aggravated my skin and that I should use more gentle, natural products, which are the kind of products I use now.
Q: What is your take on the K-beauty phenomena that is sweeping the world of cosmetics?
A: I think that Korea definitely has great products (NOT ALL!). However, it is important to emphasize that the fact that a lot of Koreans have great skin has to do with other factors too such as diet, genes, and wearing sun protection daily. Always choose the products that are right for your skin by experimenting and always wear sun protection no matter what!
Q: Can you please describe your skincare routine and how did you establish it?
A: It took a lot of trial and error and a very long time for me to establish my skincare routine. My morning skincare routine includes: rinse with water, gently pat dry, toner, hyaluronic acid serum, oil free moisturizer, sunscreen. Sometimes, less is more!
My night time routine: oil cleanser (if I wear makeup), gentle cleanser, exfoliation with a chemical exfoliant (the process of removing dead and dull skin cells from the skin surface - I.D) rich with AHA and BHA (once or twice a week), as well as a good quality sheet mask (once or twice a week) or wash off mask, ampoule, essence, serum, moisturizer and oil. However, it is important to state that I don’t always follow this night routine! I listen to my skin and do what I feel is needed on that day. Sometimes I’ll just apply an ampoule, essence, and a moisturizer only.
Q: How do you go about choosing the products you use?
A: The skin is the largest organ on our body and it absorbs chemicals! I try to choose natural and organic products as much as possible.
Q: What tips do you have for someone who is new to skincare and is just starting building their skincare routine?
A: Be patient and try different products. Wear sunscreen every single day!! NOT ONLY WHEN YOU GO TO THE BEACH!
