Sheet masks frequently asked questions

In this blog I would like to answer common questions on one of the biggest icons of the K-beauty trend that has become an integrated part of many people's skincare routine - sheet masks.
What are sheet masks?
Sheet mask are sheet fabrics made of different materials such as gel, cotton and paper that are soaked with a solution of concentrated essence or serum. The solution contains active ingredients such as Hyaluronic acid, antioxidants and vitamins (e.g., vitamin C). Each sheet masks is usually designed for one time use and packed and sealed separately.
Where do sheet masks originate from?
Sheet masks originate from South Korea and they are a major part of the K-Beauty cosmetics phenomena that has been sweeping the world of beauty in recent years. Furthermore, sheet masks are nowadays one of the fastest growing trends in cosmetics globally and many brands are producing their own types of sheet masks.
How to use sheet masks?
After cleaning the face with a cleanser and applying a toner, apply the sheet mask on the face starting from the forehead and then gently fitting it all over the face. Next, sit back and relax for 10-20 minutes (suggested time varies between one sheet mask and another).
Finally, remove the sheet mask and gently pat with your palms to support full absorption of the essence/serum and continue with the other stages of your skincare routine (e.g., eye cream, moisturizer).
What are the different type of sheet masks?
There are many sheet masks in the market that vary by their purpose and their price range. Most sheet masks are designed to provide deep moisture and hydration for the skin and usually contain ingredients that "trap" water and maintain hydration such as Hyaluronic Acids. Other sheet masks are designed to support the brightening of the skin and would usually contain vitamin C. There are also many sheet masks that contain different botanic extracts (e.g., green tea) which may help calming the skin and reduce irritation.
What are the potential benefits for the skin for using sheet masks? There are many potential benefits for the skin from using sheet masks including:
1. Help boost hydration and soothing for the skin
2. Nourish the skin with various active ingredients such as antioxidants (e.g., vitamin C), Hyaluronic Acid and collagen
3. Temporarily, make your skin look more radiant and glowing (so they are great to apply before special events!)
4. A great tool to relax and destress your skin and mind for 15-20 minutes during a stressful day
What are the risks of using sheet masks?
Sheet masks may usually be used regardless of skin type. However, as sheet masks may increase the level of temperature of the skin they may not be suitable for use by people with acne-prone or oily skin.
Also, it is not recommended to leave the sheet mask on the face for more than 20 minutes or when the mask starts to feel dry as it may ignite a reverse affect of absorbing moisture out of the skin.
